The Royal British Legions Silence in the Square event, compered by Ben Shephard featured performances by Athlete, Cerys Matthews, Only Men Aloud, Mark Knopfler and Stephen Fry.
The crowd of almost 10,000 gathered to observe the 2 minutes silence and pay tribute to those killed in over 90 years of conflict.
