Universal Music announced the details of Alchemy – Dire Straits Live re-release. The re-release will include 3 versions: DVD (cat. nbr.0602527336305), Blu-Ray (cat. nbr.0602527336312) and DVD + 2 CD deluxe edition (cat. nbr. 0602527336299). The release date: May 03 – 07, 2010.
Previously the Alchemy – Dire Straits Live album (recorded live at at Hammersmith Odeon in London) was released on LP and CD in 1983, and on VHS in 1984. Now, the picture and sound have been digitally remastered in high definition (DVD & Blu-Ray) and 5.1 surround sound (DTS & DTS HD Master). The original tapes was remixed by Mark’s co-pilot Chuck Ainlay.

Presumably, as with any Dire Straits and/or Mark Knopfler DVD, the American licensee(Warner Music) will decline to release it. Hopefully, in Canada, where Universal Music handles Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler, the DVD will be released, and this will provide an NTSC (U.S.A.-compatable) DVD.
I’ve bought “Mark Knopfler-A Night in London”, “Dire Straits-On The Night” & “Dire Straits-Sultans of Swing:The Very Best of” on Canadian DVD’s. The Canadian DVD’s of “A Night in London” & “On The Night” were of excellent quality, but unfortunately, the Canadian DVD of “Sultans of Swing” has poor,phasey sound, and I never played it again after the first play. Fortunately, I have the Japanese Laserdisc of “Dire Straits-The Videos”, and that release has excellent sound.
I wonder if there’s anything that Mark can do about Warner Music U.S.A.’s uncooperative stance about releasing his video programs on DVD in the U.S.A.
1. There is not any info about release for US yet.
2. It is not confirmed, but Universal Music says that European DVD will be NTSC (no PAL)
3. The Very Best of Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing DVD was released in Europe with PCM 16bit/48kHz soundtrack and sounds better than the same CD with HDCD. More over, the sleeve note has a wrong information that DVD audio is Dolby Digital 2.0. Sorry, I do not have any details about DVD released in Canada.
4. On the Night and A Night in London DVDs were released with poor Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtracks without any remastering. It is a simple tranfer from VHS.
